This photo was taken in Castle Rock regional park in Walnut Creek, CA at the base of Mount Diablo in September of 2013. It was a few days after the Morgan fire on the back side of the mountain had been contained. The dark brown patch is the only burnt area that we could find from the ridges on the west side of the valley in Castle Rock park. With over three thousand acres burnt in the fire we had expected to see much more damage. Thankfully the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CDF) had stopped the blaze before it could engulf Castle Rock.
