blackbird in a field

This Red-winged Blackbird was spotted during a hike through part of the Lime Ridge Open Space in Concord California. The contrast of his bright red spot and dark black body against the muted yellow-green of the dry grasses and clear blue sky lent the perfect opportunity for a photograph. These birds can be seen as far north as southern Canada during the summer. They migrate to Central America and the southern United States as winter approaches. They are claimed to be the most abundant land-bird in North America. Their flocks can contain in excess of one million birds each.
